CFL QB/RECEIVER DUOS TO WATCH IN 2019

by
Randy Steinman

Two talented quarterbacks and three productive receivers changed teams through free agency prior to the 2019 CFL season. As a result, here are three qb/receiver duos that could shine in 2019:

MIKE REILLY, QB and DURON CARTER, RECEIVER/ B.C. LIONS

B.C. fans could be in for an aerial treat if Duron Carter gets his CFL act together. With Mike Reilly throwing to him Duron Carter could finally become the CFL star he thinks he is.
Carter, 28 is a five-year CFL veteran now with his fourth team. He spent five games playing cornerback with Saskatchewan in 2018. In his five CFL seasons Carter has had 900 or more receiving yards four times.
Reilly, the 2015 Grey Cup MVP was also the CFL's Most Outstanding Player in 2017. He has thrown 30 touchdown passes each of the last two seaons. Reilly threw for more than 5,000 yards in three consecutive seasons (2016,2017 and 2018) and led the CFL with 5,562 passing yards in 2018.

TREVOR HARRIS, QB and GREG ELLINGSON, RECEIVER/ EDMONTON ESKIMOS

Former Ottawa teammates Trevor Harris and Greg Ellingson are reuinited in Edmonton.

Quarterback Trevor Harris broke into the CFL in 2012 with Toronto and spent the last three seasons with Ottawa. He threw for 5,116 yards and 22 touchdowns in 2018.
After two seasons with Edmonton receiver Greg Ellingson spent the last four seasons with Ottawa where he put together four seasons of 1,000 receiving yards or more. He had five receiving touchdowns in 2018 after a career-high of 12 in 2017.
The play call of "Harris to Ellingson" was a common one in Ottawa and should produce favourable results in Edmonton now.

JAMES FRANKLIN, QB and DEREL WALKER, RECEIVER/ TORONTO ARGONAUTS

Derel Walker was the CFL's Most Outstanding Rookie in 2015. He was second in receiving yards in 2016 (1589). Walker played in only 11 games in 2018, missing 7 games due to injury. Former CFL receiving great turned TSN analyst Milt Stegall recently touted Walker as the best receiver in the CFL, a sentiment shared by many others.
James Franklin is expected to win the Argos #1 QB job. He set the Argos single-season record and led the CFL with 14 rushing TD's in 2018. If Franklin does get the starting QB job in Toronto he"ll have the luxury of throwing to the talented Derel Walker.
